About the Event
Circadian String Quartet presents:
Time Travelers: conversations across time in the string quartets of Shaw, Piazzolla and Beethoven.
How does the past talk to the future? How can the present and future talk to the past? A partial answer can be found in the string quartets of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Caroline Shaw and Astor Piazzolla. Beethoven’s forward looking last string quartet, Op. 135, with its radical formal juxtapositions and intercutting cracked open possibilities which 20th century and 21st century composers like Shaw and Piazzolla are still grappling with. Shaw’s entr’acte directly engages the past music of Haydn and Beethoven and takes it in new unexpected directions while Piazzolla in his Tango Ballet combines the rhythmic vitality of Tango, the harmony of jazz, and the intercutting and long form juxtapositions of late Beethoven. Join us as we present these three compositions which engage in lively conversations across time and space.
